Damage to vehicles, minor and major injuries and death can all result from collisions. Car accidents on the interstate tend to have more serious results than those on other roads because of the speed at which the vehicles are traveling. Unfortunately, drivers can often be more reckless when there is a long stretch of open road in front of them. Also, driving at night becomes riskier because there is less time to react to unexpected objects. A recent accident on a Maryland interstate showed how devastating such a collision could be.
A woman was driving west on I-70 one Saturday when her vehicle was struck. The car responsible for the accident had been traveling through the westbound lanes while going east. The eastbound vehicle caught fire after flipping and crashing over the guardrail. Troopers arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.
Authorities declared that the passenger in the wrecked vehicle had died in the accident. Both drivers were taken to nearby hospitals by air transport. Alcohol is said to have been a contributing factor in this fatal collision. Any citations and charges for reckless driving or vehicular assault have not yet been filed.
Car accidents at speeds above 70 mph are catastrophic enough when the vehicles are going in the same direction. When an accident, like this one in Maryland, involves two automobiles traveling in opposite directions, the consequences can be even more severe. This accident resulted in the death of one man and the substantial injury of two others. The family of the passenger who was killed can file a claim for wrongful death in order to receive some financial reimbursement for funeral costs. The woman who was flown to the hospital can also file a claim to assist with the cost of damages and medical expenses.
