Podiatrist performs surgery, now faces medical malpractice suit

In day-to-day operations of a business in Maryland, mistakes are bound to happen. Sometimes the mistake results in nothing more serious than a miscommunication between two team members. Unfortunately, when mistakes occur at a health care center, the results can have deleterious effects on an individual’s health and, in some cases, when the health care provider performs his or her responsibilities negligently, sometimes can lead to a medical malpractice suit.

A recent out-of-state lawsuit alleges a podiatrist’s decision to perform surgery was wrong and, further, the resultant care was performed negligently. A couple filed the lawsuit in early August of this year. The suit claims that their podiatrist and the medical center that employs him acted negligently in that they failed to correctly diagnose the woman.

According to the complaint, the woman visited the podiatrist in August of 2013 and complained of foot pain. Soon thereafter, the podiatrist allegedly used careless judgment when he performed an operation called a plantar fasciotomy on her foot. Only a short while later, the woman experienced severe pain in the lower half of her body and was rushed to a local medical center, where she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism, as well as a condition that arose due to her recent surgery.

When a health care provider’s negligence results in serious harm, the patient sometimes seeks to file a medical malpractice suit. Successfully navigated, a medical malpractice suit can result in financial compensation if it is proved that the negligence of the patient’s medical provider, and/or the provider’s employer, factored into his or her injury. In Maryland, victims of medical malpractice often seek the assistance of an attorney experienced with these types of suits to assess their situation and represent them in the proceedings.
