Arrest made in horse and buggy hit-and-run accident

Leaving the scene of an accident, no matter how minor, is a serious offense. An elderly man is fighting for his life after being injured in a collision between a pickup truck and his horse and buggy. In Maryland, a charge for hit\-and\-run accident with serious bodily injury is considered a felony and holds severe consequences.

The two occupants of the buggy, a husband and wife, were hit at about 5:35 p.m. Witnesses said a dark-colored pickup truck struck them and sped off, leaving the occupants injured and their horse dead. The 86-year-old man was airlifted to an area hospital with severe injuries. There is no report on his wife's condition.

A news team witnessed police arresting a man who had returned to the scene of the accident. Police determined that he was the driver involved in the collision. The 32-year-old man from Mechanicsville was taken into custody and charged with failure to stop his vehicle at an accident scene involving injury. He is also charged with failing to stop after an accident involving property damage, failure to remain at the scene and failure to render aid to an injured person. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Nothing is more painful for a family than finding out their loved ones were left for dead along the side of the road. This family will suffer a lifetime of physical, emotional and financial hardship because of one person's carelessness. In Maryland, it may be beneficial for family members to contact an attorney to review the hit-and-run accident allegations and possibly pursue legal recourse.
